Manchester City 1-0 Tottenham: Mauricio Pochettino believes his side ‘deserved a draw’ against Premier League leaders

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino believes his side ‘deserved a draw’ in their defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Pochettino’s men were unable to inflict Premier League heartache on the Citizens after knocking them out of the Champions League on Wednesday, with Pep Guardiola’s men winning 1-0 on Saturday.

Spurs were unable to inflict a double whammy on City

However, Spurs worried their opponents on a few occasions with the likes of Heung-min Son and Lucas Moura going close.

And Pochettino spoke of his pride for his players despite being obviously disappointed with the result.

Speaking after the game, Pochettino said: â€Å“I think it was a good performance. I am so happy, so proud.

â€Å“Of course disappointed with the result but it was a good performance, an even game and I think we deserved a draw but in football sometimes you don’t get what you deserve.

â€Å“It’s always difficult to dominate Manchester City. You have to have unbelievable quality but I think the way we played was very good.

â€Å“We can connect and create a lot of chances even though it’s difficult to do against Manchester City and I’m disappointed with the result but congratulations to Man City.”

Spurs had a penalty appeal waved away by referee Michael Oliver in the second-half when Dele Alli chested the ball down onto City defender Kyle Walker’s arm.

Unlike in the Champions League, there was no Video Assistant Referee to consult.

And when asked about his views on VAR use, Pochettino maintained his VAR concerns and said he respects the decision of the referee more despite being a huge beneficiary of the system on Wednesday night.

Pochettino added: â€Å“I accept the performance of the referee. The interpretation, the capacity to decide of course I accept. I accept more from the referee than VAR.”

And with just one year left on his Stamford Bridge deal, Hazard has been heavily linked with a summer move to long-term admirers Real Madrid.

“If it’s my last game I will try to do everything for this club to win a trophy,” he told BT Sport.

“In my mind I don’t know yet [about the future], I don’t think about that. I’m only thinking about winning something for this club and this squad.

“We played a great game but the semi-final is not so easy. We are happy and we will go to Baku to try to win the trophy.”

Chelsea will take on Arsenal in an all-English Europa League final on May 29 after the Gunners beat Valencia 7-3 on aggregate in the other semi-final tie.

Reports in Spain claim Hazard could hand in a transfer request in an attempt to force through a move to Madrid.

The Blues will be even more reluctant to let their star man leave after the club’s transfer ban was upheld on Wednesday.

In February, Chelsea were fined £460,000 for 29 transfer breaches and FIFA turned down their appeal earlier this week, with the case set to go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Blues boss Maurizio Sarri admits the club will not be able to catch Premier League rivals Manchester City and Liverpool unless their transfer ban is overturned.

He said: “It’s very difficult to cover the gap at the moment – we need to work, probably we need to do something from the market.

“So it’s not easy, because the level of the top two is very, very high. As we can see in Europe so it’s not easy.

“Of course, we have to work and we have to try. In my opinion we can reduce the gap.

“I don’t believe when you buy 10 players, I think that we have to buy only one, two players, otherwise it’s very difficult to improve immediately.

“I think we are a very good team, so we need only one, two players, no more.”

Valencia fans have been firmed performing Nazi salutes and making monkey noises during their defeat to Arsenal.

A double from Alexandre Lacazette and a late Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang strike completed a remarkable 3-1 comeback during the first leg of the Europa League semi-final.

But a video on Twitter posted by Telegraph journalist Tomé Morissy-Swan shows travelling supporters making one-armed salutes and imitating monkeys.

Six Valencia fans were removed from the stadium, but it is unclear if these are the individuals involved in the video.

The Gunners released a statement in response to the incident which read: â€Å“We are working with Valencia on this. We utterly condemn such behaviour. It has no place in society or football.

â€Å“We continue to encourage fans to report  incidents and to provide witness statements so effective action can be taken.”

La Liga side Valencia have also released a statement condemning the actions of the moronic individuals.

“In relation to the images in the stands of Arsenal Stadium appearing on social networks, Valencia CF:

“1. Publicly condemns bluntly and expresses its firmest rejection and zero tolerance, as it has always done, towards the isolated gestures of people located in the visitor’s stand and that, evidently, do not represent in any way the Valencian fans.

“2. In contact with its legal services, it is working on the identification of the responsible persons to proceed, in case of being subscribed to the club, to take the corresponding disciplinary measures, for which requests the collaboration of the rest of the fans located in said tier .

“3. Although these attitudes are absolutely unjustifiable in any case, the VCF is trying to obtain information, in the same way, about possible provocations prior to said verbal and gestural confrontation between people from the local and visitor stands.”

Racism has blighted the game across Europe this season, with UEFA expected to open disciplinary proceedings.

Equality and inclusion organisation Kick It Out also released a statement condemning the acts of blatant racism.

â€Å“These blatant racist gestures are shocking and inexcusable,” a statement read.

â€Å“We hope the relevant authorities identify the perpetrators and take the strongest possible punishment.

Football: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's honeymoon continues

Football: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's honeymoon continues

LONDON ̢ۢ Paul Pogba took another swipe at Jose Mourinho on Sunday by thanking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for giving him the attacking freedom to enjoy his football again.
The France midfielder created the only goal of the game for Marcus Rashford with a wonderful pass as Manchester United extended their remarkable run under their interim manager with a 1-0 Premier League away win over Tottenham.
Solskjaer now has six straight wins - the best start of any United manager - and their turnaround since Mourinho's firing has coincided with a series of match-winning displays from Pogba, who has been given a licence to roam "like Frank Lampard".
Declaring after their Spurs victory he was now "always smiling" as "it was a pleasure to play again", he told reporters: "Before the coach arrived, I was in the shadows, on the bench, and I accepted that.
"I am enjoying playing my football now. I like to be more attacking, I had to defend too much before and that is not my best attribute. This is my position. The manager tells me to get into the box and score goals.
"Everything comes when you are free and you have the trust of the manager and the players, so they make it easier for me as well.
"I know (Nemanja) Matic is there. I know we can press high and, when we get the ball, I can shoot, I can pass and that's what we have been doing since the new manager came in. I have security behind me and have freedom to go, so it helps me."
And if Wembley was an audition for the permanent United role, Solskjaer is surely closer to a callback at the Theatre of Dreams after impressing against Mauricio Pochettino, the man widely tipped as the front runner.
He demonstrated his ability to do the job long term and showed there is science behind the smiles, displaying acuity by exploiting Spurs' vulnerability out wide when they start with a midfield diamond.
Pogba lauded Solskjaer's tactics, insisting he deserved equal credit for the pass that teed up Rashford, saying: "It's a great ball but we've been training for this all week because we knew this was the weakness of Tottenham.
"When they attack one side, they get very high and we need to attack on the opposite side. We knew we could hurt them in this way and we worked on it."
Pochettino abandoned the shape in the second half, switching to a 4-2-3-1, and Solskjaer could not check the shift in momentum, with only the excellence of David de Gea preventing Spurs from not just levelling but winning.

  • 6

  • Consecutive wins Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has guided Manchester United to, the best of any new manager at the helm of the 20-time English champions.

The Spain No. 1, who later sounded a warning to the rest of the league that they were now seeing "the real United", made 11 saves after the break - more than any other goalkeeper has made in 90 minutes this term - to deny Spurs, and Solskjaer felt he could be the greatest to put on gloves at Old Trafford.
He said: "We've had some great 'keepers at this club and he's challenging both Edwin (van der Sar) and Peter (Schmeichel) for the No. 1 spot historically."
The Norwegian also insisted afterwards the win would have no bearing on his future despite the presence of most of United's power brokers, including executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, former chief executive David Gill and former manager Alex Ferguson in London.
"This game was never about me and him," Solskjaer said of his Argentinian counterpart. "For us, it's three points. We had to beat them today so we had a chance to catch them. Seven points is catchable, 13 would have been impossible.
"I'm just doing my job until my contract runs out at the end of June. The win was massive. Results like this give you confidence."
While de Gea thwarted Spurs' bid to record a first league double over United since the 1989-1990 season, Pochettino showed little sign of disappointment, lauding his side for "one of the best performances that I saw since I've been here and the best 45 minutes (after half-time)".

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock slams FA for ‘out of order’ disciplinary hearing and says ‘they want robot managers’

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock has branded the Football Association ‘out of order’ after he was hit with a £20,000 fine this week.

The Bluebirds boss is not happy with the FA for employing a barrister to present the case against him at a disciplinary hearing, and says the ‘just want robot managers’.

Neil Warnock has accused the FA of squeezing the humour out of football

Warnock was fined on Wednesday for remarks he made about Premier League officials in three separate interviews, following the controversial 2-1 home defeat to Chelsea on March 31.

The 70-year-old – who was furious after that game – has accepted the fine after calling Premier League officials the ‘worst in the world’, but says he is bemused by the FA’s disciplinary procedures.

“When you get an institute like the FA, as big as it is, I find it disappointing that they’re allowed to bring in an outside barrister to prove the case against me,” Warnock said on Friday.

“He had all the information on what my arguments are three to four weeks before and [time to] get his head around it. It’s a bit out of order if I’m honest.”

Warnock was hugely disappointed with the officials following Cardiff’s defeat to Chelsea

Warnock, who was represented by the League Managers’ Association at the London hearing, said his evidence consisted of similar comments made by Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri, that the FA ignored.

“I was disappointed in the first two charges,” Warnock said.

“I didn’t think they warranted being proven guilty, not when we showed them an article what Sarri said about referees less than three weeks ago and he never got a charge.

“They just want robot managers, the humour has gone out of the game.”

Warnock also fears his Cardiff side could be relegated by former club Crystal Palace this weekend.

Cardiff must win their final two games, at home to Palace on Saturday and at United next week, to have any hope of overtaking Brighton and avoiding the final relegation place.

Brighton have a four-point advantage and a far superior goal difference ahead of their final games against Arsenal and Manchester City.

“If we don’t win this game against Palace, we can forget it,” Cardiff boss Warnock said.

“But we are up against a side that play some of the best football in the Premier League away from home. We have to hope we can cope with that and our forwards can create chances.”

No pats on backs for City after rout: Pep

No pats on backs for City after rout: Pep
LONDON ̢ۢ Pep Guardiola's relentless pursuit of excellence means the bar always has to be set higher at Manchester City than at other clubs.
Part of the reason why he is so hard on his players also has to do with the fact City have won most of their honours over the past decade unlike Liverpool, whose "trophy room is much bigger than ours".
Despite rounding off an "incredible week" by smashing Chelsea 6-0 on Sunday to return to the top of the Premier League on goal difference, the City boss revealed there were no pats on the backs in the dressing room, with the most competitive title race in recent years.
He told reporters: "We don't love each other too much, the players and the staff. We don't let them breathe, but it's the only way.
"Nobody can say anything bad about us because these guys work a lot. The more you win games, the more you have to work.
"We have to maintain the level. We are competing with Tottenham and Liverpool. They've made the best starts in their history... so for us to still be there means a lot.
Above: Manchester City's Sergio Aguero celebrating the third goal, his second, against Chelsea at the Etihad on Sunday. He later scored a third goal to equal Alan Shearer's league record of 11 hat-tricks as he became the club's all-time top scorer in the top flight with 160 goals in 229 appearances. PHOTO: REUTERS

"To score six against Chelsea and the way we played, we had so much attention. We did it, it's an incredible compliment to the players, they are outstanding."
Guardiola also defended Maurizio Sarri, his Chelsea counterpart and close personal friend, after the Blues suffered their biggest defeat in 28 years, fuelling the sack rumours.

'SUFFOCATE' FOR SUCCESS
We don't love each other too much, the players and the staff. We don't let them breathe, but it's the only way.
PEP GUARDIOLA, Manchester City manager, on the relentless pursuit of excellence required to keep fellow title contenders Liverpool and Tottenham at bay.

Urging patience and drawing parallels with his debut season at City, he added: "People don't understand how difficult the first year can be. My first season here was difficult. People think if you buy players, you can immediately come in and win, but you need time."
Chelsea were blown away by a double from Raheem Sterling and a Ilkay Gundogan strike, while Sergio Aguero equalled Alan Shearer's league record of 11 hat-tricks as he became the club's all-time top scorer in the top flight with 160 goals in 229 appearances.
But, as far as Guardiola is concerned, City can still reach another level or two. Having led Barcelona to three successive LaLiga titles and two Champions League trophies, the Spaniard issued a challenge to his side - to emulate the greatest team of the 2008-12 era.
He added: "We have won three titles since we are together, (but) in Barca, we won much more.
"That team won the Champions League, World Club Cups, six trophies in the first season.
"(But) the desire to want to do the best is incredible and similar. For us to get 100 points (in the league last season), break all records, (I must) continue to push them and push them."

And if City are to pull off an unprecedented quadruple this season - they remain the only English team capable of achieving the feat - Aguero will be key to their chances.
Having hailed his big-game mentality in the lead-up to the game, Guardiola later praised Aguero's "consistency", telling the BBC: "I have said many times, Sergio scores every single season a lot of goals.
"I admire these kind of players. Young players come, but some stay for a long time, that is fantastic."
Sterling agreed with his manager, claiming Aguero should be "cherished".
He told Sky Sports: "It was a terrific performance from the team - the manager set us up and got us ready for the game. Sergio is a player we depend on."
Asked how he felt about matching Shearer's mark, the Argentina striker, who prefers to do his talking on the pitch with unnerving accuracy, stayed true to fashion, insisting he had "to continue the same way".
