Manchester United should try and ‘pinch best young talents’ like Man City’s Phil Foden and Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi, says Tony Cascarino

Manchester United should be trying to sign the best young players in Europe now Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the club’s permanent manager.

This is according to Tony Cascarino, the former Republic of Ireland striker, who says United should try and tempt the likes of Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden and Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi, the winger, to Old Trafford.

Solskjaer was confirmed as United’s permanent chief on Thursday after excelling in the position of caretaker, and he promised in his first press conference that the Red Devils would be utilising the transfer market this summer.

But after a number of dodgy signings over the past couple of years, Cascarino believes it may be time for United to move away from their current philosophy of buying big name players for huge fees.

In his Times column, talkSPORT pundit Cascarino writes: “United have tried the approach of big names and big signings, but United are about something more than that.

“After all why did they consider Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino? Because they wanted a manager who could mould and improve players and build a dynasty.

“This approach has to filter into the plans for summer signings.

“United should be going after players like Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace and Bournemouth’s David Brooks – young players who will want a chance to prove themselves at the highest level, who can add something to United’s squad.”

Brooks, the midfielder, and full-back Wan-Bissaka have both been linked with summer switches to United having excelled with Bournemouth and Crystal Palace respectively.

They are both still only 21, and signing the pair is a move one could imagine Sir Alex Ferguson would have made throughout his time in charge at Old Trafford.

Jadon Sancho, the England winger, is another player linked with a summer move to United, and Cascarino has backed such a transfer – even if it costs the Red Devils dearly.

“If United think they can get him then why not try and sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund,” he continues. “They would probably have to break their transfer record, to do that.”

Solskjaer should not stop there, however, with Cascarino suggesting the Norwegian speaks to Foden and Hudson-Odoi – two of English football’s brightest talents – to tempt them to Old Trafford.

The duo struggle for game time at their current clubs – Man City and Chelsea respectively – and Cascarino says United can use their record of playing youngsters as proof that a move to the Red Devils is the perfect option.

Cascarino adds: “Solskjaer should be looking at the potential Financial Fair Play problems that Manchester City and Chelsea may be having and try to sneak in to pinch the best young talent in Europe.

“Why not go to Phil Foden or Callum Hudson-Odoi and say ‘Look at Rashford, look at Tahith Chong – we are going to give young players a chance, come and play for us’.”
