Raheem Sterling’s hat-trick helped rampant City cement their place in the history books as completed an extraordinary domestic treble.

Fresh from wrapping up the Premier League at the end of a rip-roaring title duel with Liverpool, City became the first men’s team in English football history to win all three domestic major honours.

Guardiola’s side emphatically brought the curtain down on an exceptional season at Wembley, where Sterling’s treble complemented David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus goals.

It was a record-equalling FA Cup final victory and saw City add this trophy to their league and Carabao Cup crowns.

And the centre-half admitted it was ‘exceptional’ to see the club where it is now.

“It’s awesome,” Kompany told BT Sport. “When I joined the club really it was never on the cards to win one trophy!

“I think actually beating Rio’s [Ferdinand] team in the semi-final against Man United was what started it off for us – that’s how we started believing we could win trophies.

“And we are 12 trophies deep now in less than seven years.

“It’s exceptional.”

Having scored a vitally important goal against Leicester City to help retain the league title, speculation about Kompany’s future has intensified.

The defender signed in 2008 shortly before the takeover by Sheikh Mansour and has been a rock for the Citizens ever since.

Although injuries have played the 33-year-old in recent years, his contributions on and off the pitch have been vital, and there could yet be another chapter to be written.

“I answered before – for me, now, it’s about celebrating,” the Belgian added when asked what was next.

“I said I wanted to win every trophy possible. I’m going to carry on with that and then we will have a good night to sleep.

“And then from tomorrow onward hopefully we can start talking about the future.”
