Celtic 2-1 Rangers: Chris Sutton slams Scottish FA for charging Scott Brown over Old Firm derby incidents

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has accused the Scottish Football Association of reaching ‘a new low’ over their decision to charge Scott Brown in the wake of the Hoops’ defeat of Rangers.

Scottish football’s governing body charged Brown for ‘not acting in the best interests of association football’ during and after last Sunday’s 2-1 win at Celtic Park.

Alfredo Morelos was sent off in the first-half of the fiery Old Firm derby for elbowing Brown in the face, while Ryan Kent is facing a two-game ban for also lashing out at the Celtic captain.

Andy Halliday was then shown a second yellow card as he clashed with Brown following the full-time whistle, as the 33-year-old started celebrating in front of the Rangers fans.

Both clubs received disciplinary charges relating to the post-match melee from the SFA, with Celtic saying they will “defend these charges vigorously.”

Following Brown’s charge on Thursday, Sutton, who scored 86 goals in 199 appearances for Celtic between 2000 and 2006, expressed his disbelief on Twitter.

Accompanied with laughing emojis, he said: “Scott Brown charged with celebrating… a new low for the SFA…”

Another ex-Celtic striker, John Hartson, added: “Another shambolic decision from the SFA…

“Can someone tell me what Scott Brown actually did? It’s beyond belief.”

While Brown was charged for his behaviour at Celtic Park, Rangers boss Steven Gerrard was offered a one-match touchline ban for his post-match comments made to referee Bobby Madden.
