Ipswich legend Terry Butcher reveals where it’s all gone wrong for relegation-bound Tractor Boys

Ipswich Town legend Terry Butcher believes the clubĂ¢€™s transfer dealings before the start of the season doomed the Blues to Championship relegation.

The Tractor Boys are 14 points adrift of safety with just 15 left to play for, leaving them all-but condemned to spending next season in League One.

Goals have been the problem at Portman Road after the departures of strikers Martyn Waghorn and David McGoldrick, who joined Derby and Sheffield United respectively before the season started.

And Butcher believes former manager Paul Hurst, who was replaced by current manager Paul Lambert in October, has a lot to answer for.

Ă¢€Å“The table doesnĂ¢€™t lie, it was the start of the season that killed us – because of the signings and the players released,Ă¢€ he told talkSPORT.

Ă¢€Å“Paul Hurst released a lot of players and a lot of goalscorers. There havenĂ¢€™t been any goalscorers in the team.

Ă¢€Å“Four Brentford players have scored 52 goals between them. Ipswich have only scored 32 goals as an entire squad.

Ă¢€Å“It was men against boys last night [during BrentfordĂ¢€™s 2-0 victory over Ipswich] at times. WeĂ¢€™ll have an older, more experienced side on Saturday, but itĂ¢€™s too late.

Ă¢€Å“We need a goalscorer, we havenĂ¢€™t had any goalscorers this season.Ă¢€

Butcher, who won the UEFA Cup with Ipswich in 1981, warns itĂ¢€™ll be tough for the Blues to bounce straight back to the Championship.

Ă¢€Å“ThereĂ¢€™s no reason why Ipswich will just bounce back. Sunderland found it tough,” the former defender added.

Ă¢€Å“ItĂ¢€™s going to be a difficult league. The younger players that Paul wants to play will have to grow up pretty fast, itĂ¢€™s going to be tough.Ă¢€
