Wolves captain Conor Coady downplays England snub: ‘These guys are World Cup semi-finalists’

Wolves skipper Conor Coady admits it will be difficult to break into the England squad after being snubbed for the latest international fixtures.

The 26-year-old defender had been tipped for a call-up but missed out to the likes of Everton’s Michael Keane and Burnley’s James Tarcowski.

Wolves have exceeded all expectations this season, most recently progressing to the FA Cup semi-finals after dumping Manchester United out in the last eight.

Coady has been immense, guiding the club to seventh place in the Premier League after some remarkable results against the top six.

After his latest snub by England boss Gareth Southgate, the defender was keen to point out the fact that he’s competing with World Cup semi-finalists.

“I thought to myself all season that I’m trying to get into a squad that just reached a World Cup semi-final.

“They’re a really good squad. England is the pinnacle of any Englishman’s career.

“I’ve not really thought about it all year, to be honest.

“If it comes, it’ll be amazing, but I don’t overthink it because it’ll become a little bit of a problem.”

During a season which has seen Wolves beat Chelsea and Tottenham in the league, Coady insists the 2-1 victory over Man United on Saturday has been the highlight so far.

“It’s the best,” he added. “In the Cup, anything can happen. Manchester United are an incredible football club with fantastic players and a brilliant manager.

“It was a special night for everybody, the atmosphere for building up for the last few weeks has been brilliant and we’d felt it all week.

“We couldn’t wait to get started and the way the whole night panned out was perfect.”
