Manchester City 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs players rated and slated in defeat to league leaders

Tottenham Hotspur couldn’t follow up their Champions League quarter-final win over Manchester City with a victory in the Premier League, losing 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

Phil Foden’s fourth minute strike was all it took but Spurs did well on the counter and should have had a penalty after Kyle Walker’s clear handball.

The result leaves Spurs with work to do in the race to finish in the top four, with Manchester United, Chelsea, and Arsenal all ready to pounce on the slip up.

But Mauricio Pochettino will be encouraged by his side’s courage and desire as they defended resolutely and attacked with menace, when they afforded the chance.

There were some poorer performances on the day as well as some fine ones too, so how did talkSPORT.com rate Tottenham’s players? Find out below.

Paulo Gazzaniga – 6/10

Generally did fine but some clumsy mistakes with his kicking saw him have an anxious first-half spell a stunning stop from Sterling after 70 minutes was key but his team-mates couldn’t make it count by claiming an equaliser.

Toby Alderweireld – 6/10

Could have done a little better for the opener but was strong and stable throughout in a tough match against the reigning Premier League champions. Was swapped out for Fernando Llorente as Spurs went for it at the death.

Davinson Sanchez – 6/10

Likewise, he could have been more aware of Phil Foden for the opening goal of the game but got his side out of trouble with his pace on a couple of occasions and helped out Juan Foyth when he could.

Sanchez deals with Aguero well.

Jan Vertonghen – 6/10

Did well throughout closing down players and blocking shots he made some smart tackles at key moments but wasn’t his usual self on the ball as Spurs looked to break on the counter.

Juan Foyth – 7/10

Stopped Sterling on a couple of occasions and did well enough he wasn’t targeted by City too much – unlike Kieran Trippier. His positioning was a little iffy and he was a touch reckless too but it didn’t cost him and he then did well when he was tasked with stopping Leroy Sane.

Foyth, for the most part, handled his opponents well.

Ben Davies – 5/10

Had the worst job of the lot against Bernardo Silva, who looked a man possessed. It wasn’t his fault but he had a rough afternoon.

Eric Dier – 5/10

It was a tough game to be thrown into after injury and he toiled in the middle of the park against a sensational City side. Understandably he managed just 60 minutes before Victor Wanyama replaced him.

Dele Alli – 5/10

Some excellent moments of skill, including an outrageous nutmeg on Bernardo Silva but ultimately he lacked the needed composure in defensive situations.

He was removed in the second half and it was no surprise when Danny Rose replaced him. He should, though, have earned his side a penalty when his touch saw Kyle Walker handball it in the City penalty area.

Alli wasn’t at his best but should have won his side a penalty.

Christian Eriksen – 6/10

Drifted in and out of the match but in the second period impressed with his tireless running as he attempted to get his side back into the game. His passing was a touch off too as he struggled for time on the ball.

Lucas Moura – 6/10

Did plenty of running and tried his best to cover Man City’s midfield while defending on a couple of occasions the ball just didn’t bounce right for him.

Heung-Min Son – 5/10

Had some good chances in the first-half and was a huge threat on the counter. Ederson had to be at his best to deny him on two occasions but he was perhaps on the fringe too much.

Son takes an early shot against City and was a menacing threat on the counter.

Substitute – Victor Wanyama – 6/10

Toughened up the midfield when he came on for Dier. It really looks like he’s regaining form and fitness.

Substitute – Danny Rose – 5/10

Sorted out Bernardo Silva with a few tough challenges which rattled the Portuguese winger. He blazed one poor shot over the bar.
