Mauricio Pochettino insists Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium needs Champions League football.
Spurs will finally play their first competitive match in their new home after nearly two seasons of waiting.
They face Crystal Palace on Wednesday at the £1billion arena, with an official opening ceremony to take place ahead of the big kick-off.
It was only a matter of weeks ago that Pochettino’s side were involved in a three-way race for the Premier League title.
However, just one win in their previous six matches has seen Spurs slip back, and they are now are in danger of dropping out of top four altogether if their form does not improve.
Failing to finish in the top four would deny Tottenham Champions League football for 2019/20 – their first full season at the new stadium
“The best stadium in the world must play in the Champions League,” Pochettino said ahead of Palace’s visit to north London.
“It will be a shame not to be in the next Champions League. We are going to fight. I have no doubt we will be the Champions League next season.
“We have seven games left, five here, and that has to give us a boost.”
